The wait could soon be over: The work of the Bremen Zucker Club in the Waller high-rise bunker is progressing. An opening is in sight.
Friends of Bremen’s subculture will be pleased with this news: The Zucker Club is aiming for an early opening. The high-rise bunker in Bremen is to be opened to the public as early as next year, more precisely in autumn 2025. The “Weser Kurier” was the first to report on this.
This would mean that at least the most serious renovation work would be completed in the building, which was built in 1941 and which the responsible association Zucker eV had already purchased from the city for 160,000 euros in 2019. In recent years, the renovation has been repeatedly delayed, and an interim legal dispute also briefly put the project on hold. But now those responsible are hoping to be able to open soon.
The plan is to be able to display a colorful mix of all genres of Bremen’s subculture on a total of six floors and to offer the individual players appropriate space for music, video art, painting and events. This is evident from a description of the club, but also from the architects’ plans, which can be viewed on the Internet.
The Zucker Club in Bremen is almost legendary. Founded in 2003 under the name Zuckerwerk, the loose network of artists and musicians, among others, initially had a club on Friedrich-Rauers-Straße for five years. After that, there were always only makeshift solutions, such as at Lankenauer Höft, on the Kellogg site and in the former addiction clinic on Neuenlander Straße. Now the club is settling down again – in one of the most famous buildings in the city.
