The prime minister of our southwestern neighbor and SDSM leader Zoran Zaev assured that if the Social Democrats’ candidate for mayor of Skopje, Petre Shilegov, loses the battle against opposition candidate Danela Arsovska, he “will not be able to lead the government” because local authorities in such a case would hamper policies at the central level. But Zaev clarified that this does not automatically mean that early parliamentary elections will be scheduled, the electronic edition of the Macedonian newspaper Sloboden Pechat quoted him as saying.
“The message is generally about mobilization. I fought against the regime, I fought inside, I made bold decisions. But there is a need for the support of citizens. There can be no municipalities that spread nationalism, conservatism. Have policies that will quarrel with your neighbors. I have said openly that I or a government led by me will no longer be able to lead like this. The parliamentary majority is stable, I believe we will have another plus. You cannot be a locomotive, a leader in such a situation. The message is to the citizens, to go out, to give their direction, “Zaev said during a guest appearance on Sitel TV.
Asked if this meant that he would resign and someone else from the SDSM would take over as prime minister, Zaev replied: .
He reiterated that a significant number of citizens had shown them a “yellow card” and that their message had been understood. “We have not been defeated by VMRO-DPMNE. Free-thinking citizens say they will vote in the second round, “Zaev stressed.
