Zoom temporarily removes Giphy integration from chat function – Computer – News

Zoom has temporarily removed Giphy’s integration into the chat component of its video service. The company says it does this to ensure good privacy for its users.

Zoom says that the option to use gifs from the Giphy platform will return as soon as ‘additional technical and security measures have been put in place’. This option has been temporarily removed to “ ensure strong user privacy, ” the company said. It is not yet known exactly when Giphy integration will return. Zoom provides no further details.

The measure to temporarily disable Giphy in Zoom’s chat is part of a number of recent security measures. This includes, for example, measures such as the option to limit screen sharing and changes in how the mutefunction works. The latter concerns the situation where a host stops a participant. This situation can then only be reversed if the participant agrees.

Recently it became known that Facebook is taking over the gif platform Giphy. The acquisition would involve $ 400 million. It is not known whether this acquisition has anything to do with Zoom’s measure to temporarily disable Giphy. It is also still unclear whether the acquisition will have consequences for the integration of Giphy on platforms other than Facebook.
