Samsung announced at the Las Vegas 2021 virtual show in early January, for its 2021 TV range, the new Quantum Mini LED backlight system associated with Quantum Matrix technology. Kesako?

Zoom on the unique Quantum Mini LED backlighting system for Samsung Neo QLED televisions (see our CES 21 news> Samsung Neo QLED TV: 12 series including 2 Mini LED UHD 8K and 3 Mini LED UHD 4K. Attention we repeat, the TV range planned for France should differ significantly from that published at the time of the show CES in Las Vegas although the framework should remain the same).

Zoom on the Quantum Matrix

First essential information, the Quantum Mini LED embeds very many diodes of significantly reduced size (several thousand but no details on their number have been communicated by Samsung), approximately 40 times (see photo below) compared to a conventional LED diode.

Another notable development, the Quantum Mini LED system is accompanied by a notable thinning of the backlighting system. Indeed, traditional LEDs are surmounted by a lens which also acts as a protection to widely diffuse the light. With Quantum Mini LED technology, this lens has disappeared (the large number of diodes eliminates the need to widely diffuse the light from much less numerous diodes), replaced by an exclusive ultra-thin film allowing the light to be guided where it is. is necessary. Likewise, the Mini LEDs are directly integrated into the LCD panel for a greatly reduced overall thickness. Namely, this system is to be compared to the OD0 technology (Optical Distance close to 0) developed by many Chinese LED specialists, but also by TCL (see our CES 21 news> TV Mini LED Ultra HD 8K QLED TCL 85 ” with OD Zero technology), and which should quickly make its appearance in the brand’s televisions.

This is when the Quantum Matrix process signed by Samsung comes into play, intended to better manage the emitted light, its intensity, its direction … The latter, for example, carries out an internal upsampling of the 12-bit gray scale in order to obtain a much more precise gradation of colors and a noticeably wider displayed palette (see first photo below). It also allows in tone-on-tone images to reveal many additional details for richer textures and increased readability of the image. (see second photo below of the black horse on a black background).

Another advantage of Quantum Matrix technology is its increased ability to dynamically manage the power distribution (voltage) of the backlighting system, to meet the need for high consumption in bright areas of the image and, conversely, to lower that of dark areas for a magnified HDR rendering.

Likewise, thanks to a sensor located near the brand’s logo, Neo QLED TVs are able to adapt the parameters of the displayed image according to the ambient light according to four pre-defined settings: dark environment (less than 80 nits ), normal environment (80 to 150 nits), bright environment (150 to 400 nits) and very bright environment (over 400 nits)

If the multiplication of diodes, of mini size, has a happy impact on the light peak compared to a conventional LED backlighting system, the replacement of the diffusion lens / protection of the diodes by a film developed by Samsung engineers makes it possible to increase even the latter, or reduce energy consumption for equal brightness. Of course, this has above all extremely beneficial effects on the reduction of light leaks, therefore blooming, on the quality of HDR rendering, colors, etc. Not to mention the possibility of further reducing the thickness of the TVs. Judge for yourself, all 2021 Samsung 8K UHD TVs are announced with a thickness of only 15mm (see capture above) across the entire screen surface, and only 25mm for all other models, from Q60 to QN95A and including AU7000, AU8000 and The Frame specimens.
