La Saulaie: a district of Oullins to be reinvented
Since 2017, the Métropole de Lyon and the city of Oullins, which each own a part of the area, have been working together on the development of La Saulaie. The town of La Mulatière, just across the Yzeron, is also involved. The objective is to reconnect the district to downtown Oullins, and to the entire metropolis. .
The project plans to rehabilitate the existing district, and to construct many new buildings in the fallow area. . The idea is to make La Saulaie an attractive and pleasant district, with a real neighborhood life, shops, jobs, green spaces, public services …
Concretely, what future for La Saulaie?
Bring housing, shops and businesses together
In the years to come, La Saulaie will become a neighborhood where you can live, work and shop : a real suburb! The idea is to attract businesses and businesses, while giving pride of place to homes. The project foresees:
825 new homes ;
58,500 m² for businesses to set up;
6,000 m² reserved for local shops and public services: grocery stores, banks, etc.
La Saulaie, an area that will remain accessible
When new homes are built, we can tell ourselves that the prices will be high, and that only the wealthiest populations will be able to come and live there. But in La Saulaie, 60% of new housing will be affordable: social housing, real solidarity lease (BRS) …
A new district, but which will respect the old buildings
La Saulaie is 40 hectares in total, half of which is fallow. There will therefore be many new constructions, but the current buildings will be kept and rehabilitated whenever possible. The objective is twofold: to preserve the heritage and identity of the district and to limit the waste caused by the demolitions.
A reconnected neighborhood
The project foresees new streets, cycle paths and public transport networks. The idea is to facilitate access between the current district and its neighbors, the Oullins station (train, metro B, etc.) and the main axes (Voies Lyonnaises, M7, etc.). In a second step, a soft fashion footbridge is planned, to directly access Lyon, because the Gerland district is just on the other side of the Rhône!
New public facilities at La Saulaie
To support these changes and meet the needs of residents, the project provides for:
a new one primary and nursery school ;
a crib ;
a gymnasium and other sports equipment;
and other infrastructures, still under study.
A sustainable eco-district
With its many new constructions, the project is a great opportunity to create a ecologically responsible neighborhood . The teams in charge therefore plan:
from low carbon constructions ;
a new generation heating network , which will use the wastewater sent to the nearby Pierre-Bénite wastewater treatment plant;
a new one-hectare park, and new trees throughout the neighborhood, to lower the temperature in summer ;
a redevelopment of the banks of the Yzeron ;
news dedicated lanes for soft modes (cycling, walking, rollerblading…).
Before the works, place for consultation!
Regular meetings
Work is expected to start in early 2024. In the meantime, the Métropole de Lyon and the towns of Oullins and La Mulatière are consulting the inhabitants, to develop a district that speaks to all. The last consultations concerned public spaces and the life of the future district , for example.
Last November, in Oullins, the public launching meeting of the La Saulaie project was sold out! The Rhône and Lyon Equipment and Development Company (SERL), in charge of development, was able to present all the upcoming developments.

A user group is also being set up. This fifteen residents and residents will be regularly consulted to design the district and be at the heart of future consultations.
First step: the project house
To allow everyone to follow the progress of the work, and to be informed about the novelties to come, the project house will be fitted out in the coming months . It can be found in 2022 at the intersection of avenue du Rhône and avenue Edmond-Locard.
