Zoom filters are certainly not one of its most notable points. In fact, and especially since the rise of Snapchat, this add-on has become practically indispensable in any videoconferencing and video application and service, and even in many photography applications. It has penetrated very deeply into the youngest, and there are already some who use them in all the uses they make of the cameras of their smartphones and computers.
It’s neither good nor bad, and it’s not something particularly new. Finding things that change our image to improve it, in any way, is not the inheritance of Zoom filters., Snapchat or Photoshop. As we can read in El Diario de Sevilla, this widespread rumor that Sara Montiel demanded that a stocking be put on the cameras that recorded her, is totally true, to the point that the RTVE museum in Sant Cugat del Valles keeps the means used for this purpose. Photoshop of the analog era, you might say.
Now, that Zoom filters and similar apps are useful in some cases and fun in others, does not prevent them from presenting certain risks either. Of course, unlike other times we’ve talked about Zoom, this time the danger isn’t given by a security issue or anything like that. In fact, they work perfectly, the problem is given by devices used by more than one person and laxity when revising the settings.
This comes from a tweet that has gone viral in recent hours, in which we can see a hearing held by videoconference, in which, among other participants, we find lawyer Rod Ponton. We assume that the lawyer would have prepared his presentation, reviewed all the documentation, possibly even rehearsed in front of the mirror. What I didn’t have, of course, was that the Zoom filters turn him into an adorable kitten who, yes, kept the voice of the lawyer.
In the video inserted in the tweet one can hear how his colleagues are trying to help the lawyer that, however, can’t find a way to turn that off, and in an instant ends up saying “I’m here live.” I am not a cat ”, which I understand your colleagues have already deduced. It is understood that the technical issue with the Zoom filters has finally been resolved and the session could proceed normally.
Although there is no formal statement in this regard, everything indicates that the lawyer would have allowed a child or teenager in his environment to use his computer and his Zoom account to talk to his friends, and he made the mistake of not reviewing the settings before using it again. That, coupled with the fact that he doesn’t seem to have much knowledge of how Zoom filters work, meant that, by surprise, he was seen in the middle of a business meeting with a sad kitten face.
You have to understand that this time everything ended well, but I understand that in certain environments, where seriousness is the flag, Appearing in a video conference this way can be a problem, a serious problem.. And this is a reminder that when sharing a computer, especially with children and adolescents, certain safety measures should be taken, such as checking if the Zoom filters are enabled.
Of course, on the other hand, I have a theory… what if the lawyer actually does a test? What if your hidden intention was to use the Sad Kitty filter in a jury hearing? It would be a brilliant plan to soften hearts.
