Zoom 5.0 brings long-awaited security features

April 23, 2020 –
With the update to version 5.0, the video conferencing solution Zoom has several features that should make working with the app more secure. This was after Zoom made headlines several times over privacy concerns.

Zoom has gained popularity not least thanks to the Corona crisis and will soon be available in version 5.0. The app enables video conferences with several participants. But at the end of March, the first security flaws became public, such as that Zoom forwards user data to Facebook without being asked (“Swiss IT Magazine” reported). Other data leaks were added later, in which the personal data of several users were offered for sale in the Darkweb. In the wake of these incidents, CEO Eric S. Yuan launched a 90-day plan to make Zoom more secure.

With the soon available version 5.0, Zoom has implemented several security features. One such feature is AES 256-bit GCM encryption, which is said to offer increased protection of session data during transport and resistance to manipulation. A complete list of the new security features can be found in the corresponding Blog post.
