Most recently, a giraffe girl who was transferred from Austria to the Riga Zoo celebrates her two-year birthday today. The celebrations take place quietly and without the presence of guests, because the new zoo resident is not yet fully accustomed to the new home and strangers, but the festive feast has already been tasted and turned out to be very tasty.
“Feeding giraffes in zoos is quite specific. Their main food is willow twigs and bark, as well as alfalfa hay. In addition, three types of feed pellets (a total of 3.8 kg per day) are provided, which are supplied by specialized zoo feed companies in Western Europe. In addition, other types of feed pellets are available for adult giraffes, such as Vakillia, whose production costs are quite high due to low demand. The portion of granules is supplemented with “Josera” mineral additives and alfalfa powder or granules. The giraffe also receives a specially prepared portion of rolled and wholemeal oats every day. Grass, fruits and vegetables contain too much water and giraffes can cause digestive problems, so only a handful of carrots are used as a special delicacy every day, ”informs the Riga Zoo.
Asne Beķere was the first to respond to the zoo’s call to pay for her giraffe’s daily meal, which contains three types of special granules, as well as mineral supplements and alfalfa powder, with her 25 euro donation. On Tuesday and Wednesday, Inese Dudareva and Vineta Daņiļeviča, respectively, will be honored by giraffe feeders, informs the Riga National Zoo.
At the moment, a total of 21 gifts have been received, but Vakilija is, of course, looking forward to the support of other benefactors, because everyday lunch becomes a festive feast if it is prepared, albeit in absentia, by a specific person, family or company, whose names will be read in the future.
