ZOH 2022 | Valiyev explained the doping finding using her grandfather’s heart medicine

Valiyev had a positive test for banned trimetazidine in December at the National Championships in St. Petersburg. However, the results of the inspection were published only after it helped Russia to win gold in the Olympic team competition.

Thanks to a decision by the Russian anti-doping agency, Valiyev avoided suspension, which was opposed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the Skating Union, but CAS rejected their appeal.

The arbitration hearing on Monday lasted six hours. “Her lawyers have provided some evidence to question the guilt. The banned substance was supposed to enter her body after she accidentally took her grandfather’s heart medicine,” Reuters chairman Denise Oswald quoted the IC’s Disciplinary Commission as saying.

The IOC also announced today that Valiyev’s sample B has not yet been evaluated. Already on Monday, he announced that if Russia places on the podium in the women’s competition, the medals will be awarded only after the case has been resolved. The team competition ceremony was also postponed.
