(UPDATING) Well, this was not expected! Apparently, the Znojmo hockey team will not participate in the next year of the Chance League. The information is published on their social networks by the players of the Znojmo team, whose player contracts, according to their words, were terminated by the owner of the club.
These terrifying words for Znojmo fans were heard on the Instagram accounts of Lukáš Zukal, Martin Šťovíček or Lukáš Adámek. Other players are gradually joining them.
The editors of Hokej.cz contacted the Znojmo manager Jakub Šigut, but he apologized saying that the club will not comment on the matter for the time being.
But what is it about? According to Hokej.cz sources, the problem is insufficient subsidy from the city of Znojmo. Last season, when the Eagles were active in the 2nd league, the amount for the A-team was five million crowns. But the management of the town hall had to reduce the support for the next year by one million. And this despite the fact that the South Moravians advanced to a higher – and therefore more financially demanding – competition.
“Yesterday we received an SMS from the owner of the club, Mr. Ohera, that unfortunately, due to insufficient help from the city, the first league cannot be played in Znojmo.”
“Yesterday we received an SMS from the owner of the club, Mr. Ohera, that unfortunately, due to insufficient help from the city, the first league cannot be played in Znojmo. They say he got a million less than for this season, when the second league was played, which is simply terrible,” one of the members of the Znojmo team revealed to Hokej.cz.
“He probably just doesn’t want to give it his all anymore, he already puts a lot of his money into hockey and solves the problem with the city every year. So when he learned that they wouldn’t help him even after advancing to the Chance League, he decided that the club would end its activities,” he adds.
“It’s a huge shock to me.”
In the corner of his soul, however, he believes that the situation will be resolved. “It’s a huge shock for me. I only found out yesterday, so I have no idea what will happen next. I was looking forward to playing in the Chance League in Znojmo. I don’t want to leave. “Some part of me still wants to believe that everything will turn out well,” he recounts. “But I understand Mr. Ohera when they throw sticks at his feet. If it weren’t for him, there wouldn’t be any hockey in Znojmo for a long time.”

Another regular of the Eagles also talks about the huge shock: “The whole of Znojmo knew what was at stake.” I watched the council live, the coalition could not admit at all how large reserves in the subsidy they committed compared to other and smaller cities.”
“The coalition mentioned that some 30 to 35% of all sports subsidies in Znojmo go to hockey, but given that other sports are not absolutely popular here, in the end the ratio of subsidies is weak even on this scale,” he thinks. He too however, he hopes that both sides will find a common language, although he realizes that it will not be easy.
“The whole of Znojmo knew what was at stake. I watched the council live.”
The situation surrounding hockey Znojmo is therefore very uncertain and Hokej.cz will continue to monitor its development carefully. Let’s just add that the Eagles dominated this year’s 2nd League and great things were expected of them in the Chance League.
