INTERVIEW: Many businesses are still struggling with the consequences of the pandemic. One of them is the legendary Prague delicatessen Zlatý Kříž. Executive director Ivana Klinderová, however, sees only the positives. “We follow the rule, if you can’t say anything nice, keep quiet. It should apply doubly to the media,” she said, among other things, in an interview with the PrahaIN.cz server.

A purely Czech affair, the sandwich, has had a privileged position in the famous Zlatý Kříž delicatessen in Prague for over a hundred years. It has stood in one and the same place for over a hundred years. All you have to do is turn away from the busy Wenceslas Square onto Jungmann Square.

“I would say that we are not only the oldest delicatessen in Prague, the Czech Republic and Central Europe, but perhaps in the whole world, because these delicatessens were founded during the First Republic, although no one actually knows when exactly,” describes the managing director Ivana Klinderová, who goes on to say , that the great energy and will of the founders of that time can still be felt today.

Klinderová appreciates the rich history, but according to her, she deals primarily with the present. He says he enjoys his work and especially thanks the team and customers.

“We are happy when we come to work every day and hug each other. Let’s say something nice. I believe that this energy is prescribed in sandwiches and in everything we do,” describes the executive.

The pandemic was tough. But the Golden Cross only wants the positive

But it wasn’t always beautiful. A relatively recent pandemic has affected everyone’s lives. In the Czech Republic, not only restaurants and delicatessens closed. This time was difficult for entrepreneurs. Some have been liquidated, others have moved on despite these problems and are keeping their businesses afloat.

The Golden Cross belongs to the second category.

“Horror,” Klinder describes the woes that the pandemic has prepared. “From our point of view, businesses have been closed completely unnecessarily and business has been drastically reduced that we are surprised that we are still here today,” admits the manager of Zlaté Kříž.

But to this day, they are said to be struggling with what most other businesses are struggling with. “We are about food, so the limitation was difficult for us,” Klinderová adds. He repeats that he is a positive person. “At that moment, our team collapsed. It’s hard to explain, these are such touching situations. That’s also why we’re sitting here today and we’re still selling sandwiches.”

According to Klinderová, the bread is unique. An artistic thing that is prepared by hand. According to her, the human element is very important.

“You can buy ham or aged meat, but you can’t make a sandwich like that at home. I tried it myself. Even if you put the same age, the same ham, the same cheese, it will still be different every time. It’s also a little bit different with us every time. Everything is written there, the mood and other factors,” says Klinderová.

They also believe in energies that can be awakened thanks to sandwiches.

“We make the spreads and salads ourselves. We don’t add any chemicals to it, we peel and cook the potatoes ourselves. It all comes down to it. We value and love that food. We are interested in quality, and we are rewarded with the sandwich,” says Ivana Klinderová, according to whom the sandwich will also reward customers. “He says he really liked it. It works differently with everyone. Energies are in a different league. Quantum energy exists, it is proven, but it is not talked about at all. Love, attention and a selection of things from nature. We like our suppliers.”

This is not customary in other delicatessens, but in Zlaté Kríž, almost all sandwiches cost the same. The price of forty-five crowns will not offend anyone these days. On the other hand, some competitors, such as Liberské Lahůdky, have this Czech delicacy a little cheaper even after the price increase.

The executive says that she doesn’t want to compare herself to anyone and wishes everyone good luck. According to her, everyone approaches sales differently, and in particular, she praises Liberské lahůdky and other Prague businesses for their work.

Comparing the price is like comparing apples and pears. “Or apples and apples. It is not possible. Here is one apple, here is another apple, even this comparison is not correct. That’s really not possible,” says the manager of the Golden Cross.

Americans and Japanese

“Every business has its customers. It seems to me that people make a general mistake, that they always want to be equal to someone. When I lived in America, in New York you have one restaurant next to another on Third Avenue. Everyone in that street is full. No one says anything about their competition, they all made a living,” he recalls.

The PrahaIN.cz server was therefore interested in which customers actually go to the well-known delicatessen in Prague 1. It is said that for the most part, these are also witnesses who know the Golden Cross from the days of their youth.

Almost half of the clientele are tourists.

“An expedition comes here and you suddenly have a full shop. They take pictures of it because you don’t have anything like it anywhere else in the world. The Japanese look at the sandwich as a revelation. Americans too. There isn’t even an English translation for it,” adds Zlatého Kříž manager Radomír Lašák, formerly the head of Czech Airlines, who also succumbed to the charm of the assortment.

In total, Zlatý Kříž offers over seventy types of sandwiches. Of course, not all of them are always available in the store, but they can be ordered without any problems. From classic ham to salami or salmon.

The most popular ones are with a golden egg, formerly called Russian.
