Ziggo outage over, broken fiber optic cables repaired

Amsterdammers who had to deal with a Ziggo outage since Friday afternoon can now watch television and use the internet again. On Sunday morning, the provider reported that the outage is over.

During the outage, victims of Amsterdam could be kept informed about updates to the outage in various ways. For example, a live blog was kept and victims could receive a text message about when the outage was over, according to Ziggo’s expectations. Customers were initially told that the outage would be resolved by 9 p.m. Friday, then 7 a.m. Saturday, 3 p.m. Saturday, then 6 p.m. Saturday, and 10 p.m. Saturday.

That expectation was adjusted again on Saturday evening around 9.15 pm; Ziggo then started from 10 a.m. on Sunday morning. Finally, at 07:22 on Sunday morning, it was reported that the malfunction had been resolved and everything is working as it should again. However, some of the customers would have received television and internet again on Saturday evening because one of the six fiber optic cables had been repaired.

The outage was caused by six broken fiber optic cables, which had multiple breaks. As a result, it was not a ‘regular malfunction’, a spokesperson for VodafoneZiggo said. It was also complicated for the technicians to repair those cables quickly.
