Zhang Shan, Wuhan journalist who exposed Covid origins, released from prison after 4 years

Wuhan: The female journalist who informed the world about the covid disease that started in Wuhan has been released from prison after four years.

Journalist Zhang Shan, who first informed the world about the Covid-19 virus in Wuhan, has been jailed by the Chinese government. After four years, they are released from prison.

Zhang Shan, who was also a lawyer, arrived in Wuhan in 2020. It was a time when covid-19 was taking hold in Wuhan. Due to a complete lockdown in the city, very few journalists were working there.

Zhang Shan had shared information about the horrors of Covid-19 through social media such as Twitter and VChat.

But the Wuhan police arrested Zhang Shan, pointing out that this had broken the peaceful atmosphere of the country and caused riots. They were arrested in May 2020.

She was imprisoned in Shanghai Women’s Prison in China for four years. She went on hunger strike several times in prison and strongly opposed the denial of justice.

Asia Human Rights Associate Director Maya Wang responded to Zhang Shan’s call.

“They were released from prison after Zhang Shan’s health deteriorated. She was not someone who would be put in prison, although it would be a comfort. She challenged the Chinese government for trying to keep the major disasters in China secret due to the Covid-19. Zhang Sha’s release from prison makes it clear that the Chinese government is responsible for abuses related to Covid restrictions,”

Sarah Brooks, Amnesty International’s China director, also welcomed the decision.
In December 2019, Covid-19 was first confirmed in a fish market in Wuhan. Later it spread throughout China. Covid had spread in 28 countries.
