De Neerhof primary school in Zevenbergen will be closed on Monday. This is due to last Thursday’s devastating fire in which asbestos was released. The particles came down in Bosselaar-Zuid, the neighborhood where this school is located. Hundreds of residents were unable to enter or leave their neighborhood for some time due to the fire and had to stay indoors as much as possible.
The big fire raged Thursday evening in four sheds on the Huizersdijk in Zevenbergen. Asbestos was in the corrugated iron roofs of the warehouses destroyed in the fire.
Primary School Inspectorate
The elementary school was inspected both inside and out on Sunday. Among other things, the air treatment plant was examined and samples were taken from some windows that had been opened. Only when it is clear whether asbestos is present will it be possible to decide what is needed to open schools and nursery schools as quickly as possible. In consultation with the primary school, the council has decided that both the school and the nursery will not open on Monday.
The freezing cold of the last few days has made it more difficult to clean up the neighborhood from asbestos. It is therefore not yet clear when the “contaminated” area is completely clean and can be released. The results of the research are expected on Monday, on the basis of which it will be possible to determine which part of the village is still polluted and needs to be reclaimed.
The municipality is happy that it will rain Sunday night. “This is beneficial, because it washes away the pollution.” Waste water flows into the sewer and this has been provided for because special valves have been installed in a number of places. The cleaning company cleans the sewer. Wadis (rainwater storage) are also monitored by the cleaning company. Even the water board holds the pulse of the wrist.
