Zero Local Corona Infections, Brunei Reports 8 New Cases from RI

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Brunei Darussalam reported eight cases Covid-19 new on Sunday (18/7) and all from Indonesia, while there are no local coronavirus infections in the country at all.

Brunei’s Ministry of Health stated that all imported Covid-19 cases came from people who came from Jakarta on July 4.

They were detected by Covid-19 while undergoing a mandatory quarantine period upon arrival in Brunei. Currently, they are all following the treatment according to the applicable procedures.

One of the immigrants is an Indonesian citizen. He started showing symptoms of fever and loss of appetite on July 16. Another Indonesian citizen also started to feel a fever on the same day.

Meanwhile, six other migrants from Indonesia also tested positive for Covid-19. They have no symptoms, but are still in isolation.

With the import of cases from Indonesia, Brunei currently records 27 active Covid-19 cases, all of which are transmissions from abroad.

Brunei itself did not report any cases of local Covid-19 transmission for 438 days. The local government has reportedly conducted 147,978 Covid tests since January 2020 from a total of 441,850 population.

Seeing this minimal number of transmissions, Brunei has been praised by many parties for being considered successful in overcoming the Covid-19 pandemic by implementing strict rules and a smooth vaccination program.

As reported The Star, the Brunei government began to roll out a vaccination program since last April. Since then, 18,246 elderly have received at least one dose of the vaccine.

Overall, 109,443 Bruneians or about 24.1 percent of the population have received at least one dose of the vaccine, while another 19,953 people (4.4 percent of the population) have been injected twice.
