Zenfone 10 vs. Galaxy S23: A Compact Android Phone Duel

We have another duel of compact cell phones here at TudoCelular. This time the fight is between two Android models. On one side we have the Zenfone 10, which recently arrived on the national market, while on the other there is the Galaxy S23. Is Asus’ top of the line a better buy than Samsung’s rival? Let’s check it out.

Design and connectivity

Asus Zenfone 10

Samsung Galaxy S23

If you are interested in the most compact cell phone, then the choice will be more difficult than you think. Here we have devices with similar measurements in size, with the difference being the superior thickness in the Zenfone and greater width in the other. Although both have a metal body, the Samsung one is a little lighter.

The S23 comes with a glass back with Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection, while its rival has a matte plastic finish. Some may find a device of this size disappointing with such material, but the Zenfone has a feeling of good construction and, having more curved edges, ensures a comfortable grip. Both are IP68 certified for protection against water and dust.

In terms of design, it is difficult to choose which one you like most, as it depends on everyone’s taste. The Galaxy bets on a more minimalist look with small rings for its three cameras. The Zenfone, on the other hand, only has two cameras on the rear, but they are much larger and clash with the harmony of the design.

The front part also differs between our duelists. While the Zenfone comes with a hole in the left corner for the selfie camera, the Galaxy has a notch in the center. The Samsung model also stands out for having thinner edges, which allows it to include a larger screen with the same measurements.

In connectivity, we have an advantage for the Zenfone with seventh generation Wi-Fi, while Bluetooth has the same version on both, in addition to coming with NFC and 5G. In wireless charging there is also a tie with a maximum power of 15W in both.

We started our duel with a point for Galaxy.

As said before, the Galaxy has the largest screen of the two. While the Korean model comes with a 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel, its rival has 5.92 inches with the same Full HD+ resolution. The difference is the higher refresh rate on the Zenfone, which goes up to 144 Hz versus 120 Hz on the Samsung.

The Galaxy wins in maximum brightness, which allows for more comfortable viewing on sunny days. Both support HDR10+ to enjoy series and films on streaming services, as well as great color calibration that allows you to have a more saturated image with colors that pop off the screen or something close to reality.

As each cell phone has its strengths, we will give a little to each.

To complete a good multimedia experience, it is important that the cell phone also performs well when it comes to sound. At this point we have nothing to complain about any of our duelists, whether in terms of power or sound quality.

Both deliver volume with similar power without distorting when at maximum. We have well-balanced audio between bass, mids and treble that guarantees a good experience with movies, games and music.

We could even tie the sound, but the Zenfone comes with a cool extra that boosts the volume for use outdoors. This mode even sacrifices bass and treble, but it helps to hear a call or audio voice in a noisy place.

This way, we will give victory to Zenfone.

Software

Both come out of the box with Android 13 with the difference in the interface that runs on top. The Zen UI present in Asus has a cleaner look and is closer to what is seen by default on Android, but it has some cool extras such as the Smart Key that allows you to use the power button with shortcuts by double pressing or sliding your finger. There is also the Side Menu that allows you to group your most used apps, similar to Samsung’s Edge Screen.

The Galaxy comes with One UI which has several modifications and comes with many more features and pre-installed apps. In terms of fluidity there is nothing to complain about, as both deliver a great experience on a daily basis. Regarding software support, Samsung stands out for offering twice as many updates as Asus, in addition to delivering security packages more frequently.

We will give points to the Galaxy S23 in software.

Performance

We have a duel of Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 versus Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. The difference is that in the Galaxy there is a small overclock in the processor speed due to the special version used by Samsung. Does this mean that the Korean model is faster?

Even testing the Zenfone with 16 GB of RAM, it was still slower in our speed test focused on multitasking compared to the Galaxy S23 with half the memory. Okay, the difference is small, but it’s good to make it clear that not always having a lot of RAM means you’ll necessarily have a more agile cell phone.

In benchmarks, however, it is the Zenfone 10 that wins. At least in AnTuTu it is higher in the score and once again it is worth highlighting that the difference is small. In games we could even declare a tie as both can run any Android game at maximum quality without any hiccups. However, the Zenfone has a small extra that allows it to go beyond 120 fps in some games due to its 144 Hz screen.

Therefore, we will give each one point in performance.

Battery

The advantage of the Zenfone 10 being thicker is its more generous battery: 4,300 mAh compared to the rival’s 3,900 mAh. The one with the greatest energy capacity is not always the one with the greatest autonomy, but this was the case with our duelists.

The Zenfone 10 surprised us in our tests by spending 35 hours away from sockets with moderate use. The Galaxy was 11 hours below that in the same type of test, which shows a huge difference in autonomy. If you are looking for a cell phone to recharge the battery just every two days, you already know which one to choose.

When it comes to recharging time, it is the Galaxy that takes the lead. Even though it comes with a less powerful charger, it spends less time in the socket due to its smaller battery. In any case, the difference of just 16 minutes does not compensate for the rival’s great advantage in autonomy.

So, point for the Zenfone in terms of battery.

Cmeras

Moving on to cameras, we have a good dispute between Samsung and Asus. The Galaxy has a more complete set of three cameras, including a telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom that is not part of the Zenfone set. Other than that, both feature a 50 MP and ultra-wide camera for wider images of the scene.

As much as Asus has been evolving the camera on its cell phones with each generation, at this point Samsung is still the best. The Galaxy S23 records sharper photos, with better contrast and wider dynamic range with efficient HDR. Both have a good night mode, with the S23 saturating colors more for a more vivid presentation.

The ultra-wide delivers similar quality in both models and even at night it does not suffer from dark, noisy images. The Galaxy wins in zoom as it presents less loss of quality, even when going beyond the optical zoom limit.

We will give the victory to the S23 in camera.

The Zenfone wins in resolution with the front camera as it has a 32 MP sensor versus just 12 MP. But don’t let the greater number of pixels fool you, as both capture great quality photos with the Galaxy’s difference featuring more vibrant colors.

In places with low light we have clearer photos on the Zenfone and better contrast and colors on the Galaxy. Furthermore, the Samsung model features automatic focus in this camera for greater versatility and tends to blur the background with fewer flaws.

Point for the Galaxy S23 in selfies.

And finally the camcorder. Both film in 8K with the difference that the Galaxy goes up to 30 fps and the Zenfone is limited to 24 frames per second at this resolution. Samsung’s top-of-the-line cell phone also has an advantage on the front when recording in 4K versus just Full HD on the Asus model.

In terms of filming quality, we can say that both are close in places with good lighting, leaving the S23 with a slight advantage at night. There is agile focus, with great stabilization and quality stereo sound capture in both.

The Galaxy S23 arrived on the Brazilian market in February for R$6,000, while the Zenfone 10 debuted here near the end of the year for the same price. As the Samsung model has been on the market for some time, it ended up depreciating in recent months and is now available for less than R$4,000, which makes its value for money better today.

Thus, we close the comparison with the last point for the S23.

It has a better design with thinner edges, a larger screen with higher brightness, support for several years of system updates, better multitasking performance and a more complete photography suite. Not to mention that it is currently the cheapest.

The Zenfone 10 has its highlights and could become an interesting option in the future. It delivers a higher refresh rate, which is good for gaming. There is more powerful sound with External Mode activated, as well as a much longer battery life.
