This year’s Emmy award ceremony is in full swing, and last night’s biggest surprise so far was when actress Zendaya (24) received her very first Emmy award.
The “Euphoria” star seemed to be amazed when talk show host and tonight’s host, Jimmy Kimmel (52), read out her name during Sunday’s virtual Emmy presentation.
– Very, very nervous
Zendaya received the award for Outstanding Leading Actor in a Drama Series, for her performance in the HBO drama series.
The 24-year-old actress, who plays the drug addict Rue in the TV series, made history with her Emmy victory as the youngest actress to ever win the category.
– I am very, very nervous, Zendaya said in his thank you speech from his home surrounded by friends and family.
– I just want to say thank you to the TV academy, and all the other women. This is sick. Thanks to HBO and A24 for the support. Thanks to my family and my team. To the incredible cast and staff of «Euphoria». I’m so lucky and I’m inspired by everything you do, she continued.

– There is hope in the young people out there
The 24-year-old broke the record previously set by last year’s winner, Jodie Comer (27), who was 26 when she received the same award.
Zendaya is also the first dark-skinned actress to win the award since 2015, when “How to Get Away With Murder’s” Viola Davis (55) won.
– I know that this feels like a very strange time to celebrate, said an emotional Zendaya during his speech of thanks from his home, surrounded by family and friends.
– But I just want to say that there is hope in the young people out there. I know that our TV show does not always feel like a good example of that, but there is hope among the young. And I just want to say to all my peers out there who do the work in the streets, I see you, I admire you and I thank you, she continued.
This was also Zendaya’s first Emmy nomination for her portrayal of the teenage addict in the HBO drama.
While the TV academy rarely recognizes young nominees, her victory shows that this can turn around, especially in this category.

The 24-year-old actress was nominated in the category along with “The Crown” actress Olivia Colman (46), “Ozark” star Laura Linney (56), “Killing Eve” actors Sandra Oh (49) and Jodie Comer as well as Jennifer Aniston (51).
It is a considerably different Emmy award than before. Due to the ongoing corona pandemic, this year’s award ceremony is being held digitally in 20 cities in ten different countries, and with 130 different cameras in the various locations where the stars are located.
