Zelenskyy Signs Security Pact with Macron in Paris

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed a security deal with France, marking a significant step in Ukraine’s efforts to strengthen its security and protect its territorial integrity. Zelenskyy traveled to Paris after signing a separate deal with Germany, highlighting the importance of international support for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression.

The security agreement between Ukraine and France is described as “ambitious” and “substantive,” although specific details have not been disclosed. Zelenskyy emphasized the significance of both the French and German deals, stating that each agreement strengthens Ukraine in its own way.

Under the 10-year agreement, France has pledged up to €3 billion ($3.2 billion) in aid for 2024. This commitment demonstrates France’s continued support for Ukraine, as it provided €2.1 billion last year and €1.7 billion in 2022. The aid from France will contribute to Ukraine’s efforts to re-establish its territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders and prevent any renewed Russian aggression.

French President Emmanuel Macron called for a European “resurgence” in response to the threat posed by Russia. He emphasized the need for European countries to be “lucid” about Moscow and not rely solely on the outcome of US presidential elections for Europe’s future. Macron also announced his plans to visit Ukraine in the coming weeks, further solidifying the commitment between France and Ukraine.

The security pact signed with France is expected to pave the way for Ukraine’s membership in the European Union and the NATO military alliance. Both Macron and Zelenskyy believe that Ukraine’s membership would contribute to peace and stability in Europe.

Germany and Ukraine Sign Bilateral Security Agreement

In addition to the security pact with France, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a bilateral security agreement with Germany. The agreement, worth €1.13 billion ($1.22 billion), focuses on air defense and artillery. It includes provisions for ammunition and missiles to support Ukraine’s defense capabilities.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz described the agreement as a historic step and emphasized Germany’s commitment to supporting Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression. The defense ministry stated that this agreement marks the first time in Germany’s history that it acts as a guarantor state.

Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to Germany for its solidarity and support, highlighting the significance of the agreement in ensuring Ukraine’s security. The bilateral security agreement with Germany follows a similar agreement signed between Ukraine and Britain in January.

Avdiivka Battle Intensifies

The battle for the Ukrainian city of Avdiivka has become even more challenging than the months-long battle for Bakhmut, which Russia captured in May. According to a brigade fighting in the area, the situation in Avdiivka has become extremely difficult due to better-equipped Russian forces.

The 3rd Assault Brigade, sent as reinforcements to Avdiivka, is facing significant challenges, including running out of ammunition and being outnumbered on the battlefield. The city has become a symbol of Ukrainian resistance against the Russian invasion, but there are concerns that Ukraine may be forced to retreat from Avdiivka.

Lukashenko Claims Arrest of “Saboteurs” on Ukraine Border

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko announced the arrest of several “saboteurs” on the border between Belarus and Ukraine. Lukashenko stated that these individuals, including Ukrainian and Belarusian nationals, were involved in an “anti-terrorist operation” and had transported explosives for sabotage activities primarily in Russia and Belarus.

Lukashenko further revealed that similar groups have been detained on a regular basis, indicating ongoing security concerns along the border. Belarus, a close ally of Russia, had provided support for Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

Zelenskyy Seeks Western Support in Germany

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Germany on a visit aimed at rallying Western support for Ukraine ahead of the second anniversary of the war. Zelenskyy expressed his intention to discuss a new security architecture for Ukraine and emphasized the need to end the war as soon as possible on fair Ukrainian terms.

Zelenskyy’s visit to Germany includes meetings with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. The focus of these meetings is expected to be on signing a long-term security agreement and strengthening Germany’s commitment to supporting Ukraine.

Zelenskyy will also travel to Paris, where he is scheduled to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron. Both leaders are expected to sign a bilateral security agreement, further solidifying the support between France and Ukraine.
