Zelensky’s trap. In Europe, they are preparing for mass destruction because of Ukraine – 2024-02-14 05:23:24

/ world today news/ Poland opposed the extension of the EU’s trade concessions for Kyiv. Donald Tusk’s government is ready to continue helping Zelensky, but not to the detriment of its own economic interests. Bulgarians and Romanians are in solidarity with the Poles. But in Brussels they stand their ground, risking screwing up many in Europe because of the regime in Kiev.

Warsaw vs. Brussels

Although Poland cannot influence the European Commission’s decision, Tusk is determined. The same position is taken by Bulgaria, Romania, and even more so by Hungary and Slovakia, which are generally against Kiev’s aid.

Grain is Ukraine’s main export product. But European farmers do not want to incur losses and lose the market. Brussels has been urged to tighten controls on duty-free grain imports. After a meeting with the farmers, EU Agriculture Commissioner Janusz Wojciechowski promised to take their interests into account.

The publication “Yuraktiv” reports that representatives of the European Commission will try to dispel Poland’s concerns. But that may not be enough for Tusk’s government. In addition, Warsaw will continue to demand restrictions on Ukrainian imports of sugar and poultry meat.

Partner block

Tusk, who has to juggle domestic and foreign policy, says he will not allow anti-Ukrainian sentiment in anyone in government. According to him, there can be no doubt about the commitment to Kiev in the confrontation with Moscow. The Ukrainian crisis is the number one problem for Poland, he emphasizes.

However, Deputy Minister of Agriculture Mihail Kolodziejczak emphasized the priority of own food security and the profitability of production. And the liberalization of trade with Ukraine directly threatens farmers.

The government nevertheless agreed with the carriers to lift the blockade at the border. More than a thousand trucks were unable to enter Ukraine for several months. By March 1, the authorities must satisfy the demands of the protesters, otherwise the border crossings will be closed again. There is everything you need for this – containers, trailers.

The blockade cost Polish companies almost a billion euros. The current situation with the export of Ukrainian grain does not suit either Warsaw or Kyiv. Both sides are interested in a quick resolution of the problem, but see the outcome in their own way. Tusk hopes that the conditions of the Polish carriers in Brussels will be accepted. Zelensky, of course, is counting on extending the concessions.

Maintenance cost

Poland is now one of Ukraine’s largest trading partners and ranks third in arms supplies. At the economic forum in Davos, President Andrzej Duda urged the West to stay tough on Russia and fight conflict fatigue.

“Nevertheless, for Warsaw, its interests have always been in the first place. Hence the blocking of the border, the fight against dumping on grain,” notes political scientist Alexander Dudczak.

Of course, Ukraine is important for the Poles, he specifies. Moreover, their aid to Kiev was well paid for by the European Union. In addition, Warsaw wants to participate in the division of the former Soviet republic and targets specific territories.

RISI’s leading expert Oleg Nemenski emphasizes: Polish transporters and farmers only want equal rights and opportunities with their neighbors. Ukrainian companies have much better conditions. This leads to the massive ruin of their European competitors. The fact that the authorities support their own is quite natural, but on the other hand, the sovereignty of Poland, as well as other EU countries, is limited.

All benefits for Ukraine are provided at the EU level and Warsaw is forced to comply. “Hardly anything will change before the summer. Farmers are on the verge of bankruptcy. Brussels fell into a trap. When they introduced the reliefs, they did not expect that it would last so long,” the political scientist points out.

The stake was a quick victory for Kiev and enrichment at the expense of Russian resources. Now in Europe they don’t know what to do. No one wants to support Zelensky’s regime at the cost of their own ruin.
