Zelenskyj thanks Norway after talks with Støre – VG

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj writes on Twitter that he thanks Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre for his support in the war against Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj writes on Twitter that he spoke with Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre on Wednesday.

– Thanks to Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre for strong defense support to Ukraine in the fight against Russian aggression. Noted the strict sanctions imposed by Norway, Zelenskyj writes on Twitter after the conversation.

He further writes that he informed Støre about the situation for the Ukrainian defense and Russia’s “criminal acts against civilians”.

– Just talked to Zelenskyj. Norway pays tribute to the Ukrainian people and the president personally for standing with their heads raised in this extremely serious moment for the history of Ukraine and Europe, Støre writes on Twitter after the meeting.

– Ukraine has broad support from the Norwegian people in their struggle, he writes.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine, Zelensky has had frequent contact with world leaders. Earlier Wednesday, he was in talks with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte.

The topic of the conversations is, among other things assistance to Ukraine’s defense and sanctions against Russia.

– On behalf of the government and the people of Norway, let me thank you for the courage of the Ukrainian people and you personally, to stand firm under the extreme situation in the history of Ukraine but also Europe, Støre says in a video he has posted on Twitter.

Norway has said they will contribute with equipment such as helmets and bulletproof vestsand 2000 M72 anti-tank weapon. Norway has also supported sanctions against Russia.

The president is said to have received a secure phone call from the United States, which he uses to keep in touch with other countries while he is in Ukraine on the seventh day of the Russian invasion.

Russian forces are moving ever closer to the largest cities in Ukraine, and bloody battles are now taking place in several places.

More than 2,000 Ukrainian civilians have been killed since Russia invaded the country on Thursday last week, according to Ukrainian security officials. They say in a statement that hundreds of buildings and other infrastructure have been destroyed, including transport facilities, hospitals, kindergartens and homes.

On Tuesday, a clearly affected Zelensky held one video-broadcast speech to the European Parliament, where he used the opportunity to draw attention to the children who have been killed in the war. Zelensky also used the speech to say that Ukraine would become equal members of Europe.
