Zelensky Reveals Permissible Negotiation Format with Russia Following the Conclusion of War

According to him, Kyiv proposed a formula where “there is an absolutely specific sequence of actions that will unambiguously lead to the end of the war.” Because Ukraine and its allies want peace.

“We do not support the war, we support the victory as a result of this war… Of course, there will be a fixation of the end of the war. But only decent countries will sit at this big table. Representative of the Russian Federation? It’s hard for me to imagine who it will be at that time. who, without a fight, first withdraws all troops from our territory. Then the diplomatic format begins,” Zelensky described a possible type of future negotiations.

In the event that the Ukrainian defenders continue to force the occupiers out of their land, then there is nothing to talk about with such people in general, the president noted.

“Because we will lose people. There will be a large number of victims. What should we talk about with these people in general? They should be isolated, not shaking hands. That’s all,” he summed up.

Context:

Russia launched a full-scale war against Ukraine on February 24, 2022. In fact, the Russian Federation unleashed a war against Ukraine in 2014, when it occupied Crimea and part of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

In April 2022, the Ukrainian Defense Forces expelled the occupiers from the northern regions of Ukraine, de-occupied part of the Kherson, Mykolaiv and Kharkiv regions in the fall. The most intense fighting is taking place this winter in eastern Ukraine.

Negotiations on the end of the war, Ukraine and Russia were at the level of delegations. In February-March 2022, four face-to-face rounds were held, and the delegations also met in a video format.

The negotiation process has been suspended because there are no specifics from the Russian side that could be discussed, explained in the Office of the President of Ukraine on May 17.

The Kremlin repeatedly demanded capitulation and acceptance of the conditions of the Russian Federation. Russian President Vladimir Putin demanded from Ukraine to cease fire and immediately sit down at the negotiating table while excluding that the return of its territories to Ukraine will be on the agenda.

In an interview with CNN that aired in September, Zelenskiy said he saw no opportunity for talks with Putin.

The Ukrainian authorities have repeatedly stated that they are pursuing the goal of de-occupying all Ukrainian territories seized since 2014, including Crimea. Zelensky did not rule out the liberation of the peninsula by non-military means.
