Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell and a delegation of senators from his party met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv, the Associated Press reported.
A video posted on Zelensky’s Telegram account shows McConnell and Senators Susan Collins, John Baraso and John Cornin greeting him in the capital. In an Instagram post, Zelensky called the visit “a strong signal of bipartisan support for Ukraine from the United States Congress and the American people.”
The trip came at a time when the Senate is working to approve a nearly $ 40 billion aid package for Ukraine. Adoption was delayed Thursday by Senator Rand Paul, who called for a proposal for a chief inspector to check the spending of the new funds. However, the final approval is not in question and may become a reality next week, the AP claims.
“They only want the resources they need to protect themselves from this abnormal invasion,” McConnell told Ukrainians last week. “And they need that help right now.”
