Zelensky responded to petition to restrict entry for Russians

The president Vladimir Zelensky responded to a petition on the website of the head of state, proposing to restrict Russian citizens from entering the territory of Ukraine.

Petition author, social activist Sergey Sternenko, offered Zelensky to ban Russian citizens from entering Ukraine or introduce a visa regime.

Zelenskiy, in his reply dated November 26, said that against the backdrop of ongoing Russian aggression, “the significant attention to this issue on the part of Ukrainian society is fully justified.”

According to him, since the beginning of Russia’s aggression in the spring of 2014, the authorities have introduced a number of measures to strengthen control on the Ukrainian-Russian border, in particular, the entry of Russian citizens into Ukraine is carried out with diplomatic, service and foreign passports, since January 1, 2018, the border service has introduced the fixation of biometric data of foreigners, including citizens of Russia.

“I would also note that the introduction of additional changes in the travel regime of citizens between Ukraine and the Russian Federation requires a thorough study and analysis of all possible development scenarios, in particular, in terms of security aspects and possible social consequences of innovations,” Zelensky said.

According to him, he sent a petition to the Prime Minister of Ukraine Denis Shmygal, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Alexey Danilov and the head of the Security Service of Ukraine Ivan Bakanov “With a request to analyze the compliance of the current regime of entry into Ukraine for Russian citizens with the needs of ensuring the security of Ukraine and protecting interests.”

Sternenko registered the petition on November 2. On November 11, she received the necessary 25 thousand votes for consideration.
