Zelensky urged the US Congress to approve additional military aid to his country during an interview with the Ukrainian president on Fox News. At the same time, Republicans in the House of Representatives are refusing to approve the funding the White House wants.
“Will we survive in Ukraine without the support of Congress? Certainly. But not all,” Zelensky emphasized, referring specifically to civilian casualties since the start of the war. The price of helping Kiev today is much lower than the price of a conflict with Russia’s forces tomorrow, he added.
Ukraine’s main backer, the US, has provided tens of billions of dollars in military aid. But the taps have been shut off, while according to international media, the Ukrainians are facing serious shortages of ammunition.
Donald Trump, who is unlikely to be the Republican nominee in the presidential election, is staunchly opposed to further aid to Ukraine. For its part, the administration of Joe Biden, which is also campaigning for his re-election, argues that if Congress does not approve the aid it will be “a gift” from the Republicans “to Putin”.
