The law increases liability for violations of road safety

Fines have been increased for passing a red light, leaving the scene of an accident, and drunk driving.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a law to strengthen liability for violations of road safety. The document provides for an increase in fines, in particular, for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, informs press service of the Office of the President.

“Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed the Law on Amendments to Certain Legislative Acts of Ukraine regarding the strengthening of liability for certain offenses in the field of road safety No. 1231-IX, which the Verkhovna Rada adopted on February 16, 2021,” the statement said.

Thus, the fines for violating the rules for using seat belts and helmets have been increased. The amount of fines increased for driving at a red traffic light, leaving the scene of an accident, as well as if a citizen drove a vehicle without the appropriate documents.

“In addition, the responsibility for driving vehicles, river, sea or small vessels in a state of alcoholic, drug or other intoxication has been strengthened,” the press service of the OP noted.

Not only drivers will be fined. The law strengthens administrative liability for violation of traffic rules by pedestrians, cyclists and persons who drive animal-drawn vehicles and animal drivers.

Also, the document allows law enforcement officers to use video recording tools. These materials must be included in the protocol on an administrative offense.

Also, the law allows police to stop a vehicle to examine drivers using special equipment to check for drunkenness or the use of drugs that reduce attention and reaction speed.

The law comes into force on the day following the day of its publication.
