“Ukraine has done everything possible to keep the US out of the war, but if it allows Russia to win, it will have disastrous consequences for America itself,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in an interview with The New Yorker, part of which was published in UNIAN.
Under extraordinary security measures, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi visited a Pennsylvania weapons factory on Sunday that produces one of the munitions Ukraine needs most to repel Russian ground forces, the Associated Press reported.
His visit to the munitions plant in the city of Scranton kicked off a week-long visit by Zelensky to the US, which is aimed at maintaining support for Ukraine in its war with Russia.
“If Ukraine had not resisted, Vladimir Putin would have gone further. First, about 40 million immigrants would come to Europe, the United States, and Canada. Second, you would have lost the largest country in Europe – a huge blow to US influence on the continent. Now Russia would have full influence there. You would have lost everyone – Poland, Germany – and your influence would have been zero,” Zelensky also said.
He emphasized that the American public must understand that the very fact of Ukraine’s existence is not a problem, while Ukraine’s resilience has allowed America to solve many other problems. Instead of Ukraine, Russia could attack Poland or the Baltic states, which are members of NATO, and for the US it would be a “disaster, a blow in the back”.
“In that case, you would definitely be involved in a full-scale war, with troops in place, funding, investment, and the American economy would be put on a war footing.” So to claim that you have been involved in this war for a long time is simply not true. Quite the opposite: I believe we have saved the USA from total war,” Zelensky commented.
He also adds that if support for Ukraine wanes, Russia may “decide that enough is enough and strike Poland — for example, in response to some provocation by Belarus.”
“And now, after two and a half years of your support and investment, for which we are very grateful, you can multiply them all by zero. America will have to start investing all over again, and in a war of a completely different scale. It will be led by American soldiers. And all this, I would add, will be of great benefit to Russia,” adds the Ukrainian president.
At one point in the war, Ukrainian forces were firing between 6 and 8,000 155mm rounds per day. These rates have begun to deplete US stockpiles and have raised concerns that stocks are not sufficient to meet American needs in the event of another major conventional war, such as a potential conflict over Taiwan.
In response, the U.S. invested in restarting production lines and is currently producing over 40,000 of this type of projectile per month, with plans to increase monthly production to 100,000.
