Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday sacked a senior military commander involved in leading the battles against Russian forces in the besieged east of the country, but he did not give a reason for this move.

In a one-line decree, Zelensky announced the dismissal of Eduard Moskalyov from the post of commander of the joint forces of Ukraine, which is fighting in the Donbass region.

Zelensky had mentioned Moskalyov by name in his daily address on Friday when he referred to military commanders he had spoken to.

Moskalyov has been in office since March 2022, shortly after the Russian military operation in Ukraine.

It is noteworthy that the Ukrainian government announced last January, the dismissal of five regional governors and four assistant ministers from their posts, after the disclosure of a corruption scandal related to army equipment.

Among the officials were Deputy Defense Minister Vyacheslav Shapovalov who was responsible for logistical support for the armed forces, Assistant Director of the Presidential Administration Kirillo Tymoshenko, and Deputy Prosecutor General Oleksiy Simonenko.
