Zelensky Discusses Challenges of Holding Elections and Calls for Western Support

Before the 2019 elections, Zelensky promised that he would not run for a second term.

According to the constitution, the next parliamentary elections in Ukraine should be held in the fall of 2023, and the presidential elections in March 2024, but Ukrainian laws and the constitution prohibit holding elections under martial law.

Ukraine’s western allies have repeatedly indicated they would like elections to take place despite martial law.

In a recent interview, Zelensky said that in order for the elections to take place, legislative changes would first need to be made, and additional funding would be needed.

He said it was very important to solve the security problem and that Western countries should help organize elections for millions of refugees in Europe and other countries.
