Zelensky calls on Davos forum to suspend deals with Russia The news

Davos (Switzerland), May 23, LETA – AFP. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on the World Economic Forum in Davos on Monday to send more weapons to his country and impose maximum sanctions on Russia.

In a video address, Zelensky told participants at the World Economic Forum that tens of thousands of lives could have been saved if Kiev “had received everything it needed in February.” On February 24, Russian troops launched a comprehensive invasion of Ukraine on the orders of President Vladimir Putin.

“That is why Ukraine needs all the weapons we ask for, not just the ones we are given,” Zelensky said.

The Ukrainian president also called for an oil embargo on Russia, sanctions on all its banks and the information technology sector, adding that all foreign companies must leave the Russian market.

“There should be no trade with Russia,” Zelensky told the world’s political and business elite.

“I believe that there are no such sanctions against Russia yet – and they should be,” said the President of Ukraine.

The United States, Britain and Canada have imposed an embargo on Russian oil and gas, but there is no consensus in the European Union (EU) on similar measures. EU Member States such as Germany and Hungary are highly dependent on Russian energy supplies.

The Davos summit, the first face-to-face meeting of the World Economic Forum in more than two years, is dominated by Russia’s war in Ukraine. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the 2021 face-to-face summit was canceled and meetings were postponed until May this year, although the event at the Swiss resort traditionally takes place in the winter.
