The Ukrainian army appears to be making progress in the battle around the capital Kiev. This is reported by the British Ministry of Defense in the daily update on the war in Ukraine. According to the ministry, which relies on information from British intelligence, the Ukrainian armed forces are increasing pressure on Russian troops northeast of Kiev. The Russian army would face “considerable logistical and moral problems” there.
The small town of Makariv, about 50 kilometers west of Kiev, is said to have been recaptured by the Ukrainian army, according to the British. This also applies to Moschun, just northwest of Kiev. In Butsha and Irpin, two towns just outside Kiev, there is a “real” chance that Russian troops could be surrounded, the ministry said.
The mayor of Kiev, Vitali Klitschko, came yesterday with similar reports and also a US Department of Defense official confirmed yesterday that the Russians still face major logistical problems. There is a lack of food, fuel and military equipment. There are also said to be soldiers with frostbite and Russian troops are struggling with communication problems.
