Zelensky made the call in a speech marking the 36th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster on April 26. In his speech he condemned the completely irresponsible actions of Russian troops in the vicinity of Ukraine’s nuclear power plants during the invasion.
“I believe that after all that the Russian military has done in the Chernobyl zone and the Zaporizhzhia power plant, no one in the world feels safe knowing how many nuclear facilities, nuclear weapons and related technologies the Russian state has,” Zelensky said.
“If Russia has forgotten what Chernobyl is, it means global control over Russia’s nuclear facilities, and nuclear technology is needed,” he said.

Rebekah Koffler, strategic intelligence analyst and author of “Putin’s Playbook: Russia’s Secret Plan to Defeat America” stated that Zelensky’s call was likely to trigger a disastrous act by Putin.
“One of the triggers for Putin’s invasion — not the main driver but the trigger — was Zelensky’s call for Ukraine to become a nuclear power,” Koffler explained.
“Russia’s entire security strategy hinges on nuclear war, because of its conventional inferiority to United States (US) forces,” he was quoted as saying Fox News, Thursday (28/4/2022).
“Putin [bisa] interpreted Zelensky’s call as a grave threat, which he must prevent,” said the former US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agent.
