Zelensky called on Germany not to fear Russia and to support Ukraine

According to Reuters, he told the head of the German government that he was too worried about the possible consequences of this step on Berlin’s relations with Moscow.

Zelenský’s comment, which he made in an interview with the German public television ZDF, comes at a time of speculation that Scholz could make his first trip to Kiev since the beginning of the war on Thursday.

“We need an assurance from Chancellor Scholz that Germany supports Ukraine,” said the head of the Ukrainian state.

“He and his government must decide: there can be no compromise between Ukraine and relations with Russia,” Zelenskyj added.

The Italian daily La Stampa said that Chancellor Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi would visit Kyiv together on Thursday, June 16, although the authorities do not comment on it for security reasons.

According to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), the trip to Kiev could mean that the delivery of promised heavy weapons from Germany to Ukraine is approaching. Germany has not yet confirmed any of these reports.

According to the Ukrainian press, the first council of the French embassy in Kiev, Bruno Caussanel, said that Emmanuel Macron was to visit Kyiv on Wednesday, June 15, after visiting Moldova.

Germany, France and Italy are facing criticism from Ukraine and other Western countries for delaying the provision of military support to Kiev and preferring their own prosperity to Ukraine’s freedom and security.

Scholz, like Macron and Draghi, denies the allegations. Until now, Scholz has refused to visit Kiev, saying he will have something specific to announce.

According to Reuters, there are growing frustrations among the government’s coalition partners of the Scholz Social Democrats (SPD), which they describe as a lack of its leadership on the issue of Ukraine.

Scholz told reporters today that Germany was sending some of the world’s most advanced mobile artillery systems to Ukraine.

However, according to him, deliveries take time, because Germany must first train Ukrainian crews to use them.
