Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The war between Russia and Ukraine continues to this day. The two countries have been officially at war since Moscow invaded the neighboring country on February 24, 2022.

This year, Ukraine made attempts to retaliate against Russia by attacking the Kursk region and other regions.

The following are the latest developments regarding the war between the two neighboring countries, as compiled CNBC Indonesia from various sources on Tuesday (27/8/2024).

Kyiv troops strike the Russian border with Belgorod

After Kursk, Kyiv forces tried to break through the Russian border to the southern region of Belgorod.

Mash Telegram channel, as reported by The Guardian on Tuesday (27/8/2024), said that around 500 Ukrainian soldiers attacked two checkpoints in Nekhoteyevka and Shebekino in Belgorod, where fighting was going on in each region.

Belgorod straddles the Kursk region, where Ukrainian troops have seized Russian territory since launching a lightning offensive on August 6.

Belgorod region governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said he was aware of reports that Ukrainian troops had tried to break through the border, but that the situation there was “under control”.

“Information has revealed that the enemy is trying to break through the borders of the Belgorod region. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the situation on the borders remains difficult but under control,” he said, as reported by Reuters.

Hundreds of Russian attacks on Ukraine

On the other hand, Russia has also carried out a series of attacks on the territory of Ukraine since Monday (26/8/2024).

Several reports said the Russian attack was carried out with hundreds of drones and missiles. The attack killed at least four people and destroyed the country’s already fragile power grid.

“Moscow launched at least 127 missiles and 109 drones in one of Russia’s largest attacks,” said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, quoted by AFP.

“Of these, 102 missiles and 99 drones were shot down,” said Ukrainian Air Force Chief Mykola Oleshchuk, who described it as Russia’s “biggest” attack.

The Ukrainian Air Force also confirmed on Tuesday morning that operations were underway to remove several Tu-95MS missile bombers from the Engels airfield in western Russia. The collapse triggered air raid warnings across the country.

Russia’s Fake Attack on a NATO Country

Russia’s attack on Ukraine appears to have targeted Poland. The NATO member state said its airspace was violated when Russia invaded Ukraine. Warsaw suggested that the outage may have been caused by a drone.

“We may be dealing with getting into Polish territory. The object was confirmed by at least three radio-location stations,” said the acting commander of the Polish Armed Forces. General Maciej Klisz.

Military command spokesman Jacek Goryszewski said the Russian military used “very likely a Shahed-type drone designed by Iran.”

“But this must be confirmed,” he told AFP, adding that it could not be ruled out that the drone had left the territory of Poland.

Zelensky himself asked European air forces to help Kyiv down drones and missiles in the future. This is so that threats from Moscow do not reach the blue continent.

“In many places in Ukraine, we can do more to protect lives if the aircraft of our European neighbors cooperate with our F-16s and together with our air defenses,” Zelensky said in a speech.

IAEA chief visits Kursk factory in Russia

Rafael Grossi, head of the United Nations nuclear agency (IAEA), visited the Kursk nuclear power plant that Moscow says has been repeatedly attacked by Ukrainian forces just 40 km (25 miles) away. after taking control of parts of Russia.

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said before his visit that the only way to assess the safety of the plant and confirm the information he received is to visit the site, which is owned by the Russian state nuclear company, Rosatom.

“The safety and security of nuclear facilities must not be jeopardized, under any circumstances,” Grossi said. “The safety and security of every nuclear power plant is the primary concern and concern of the IAEA.”

The safety of nuclear power plants has been at risk again during the war. Moscow and Kiev have repeatedly blamed each other for drone and artillery attacks on the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Russian-controlled Ukraine.

Meanwhile, a Russian Telegram channel with links to security agencies said earlier on Tuesday that Ukrainian forces had attacked the border, although there was no immediate official confirmation of fighting there.

Putin’s allies say the US is behind the arrest of Telegram’s CEO

Vyacheslav Volodin, the chairman of the Russian State Duma parliamentary house, said that the United States was behind the arrest of Pavel Durov, the founder and CEO of the Telegram messaging platform.

The top ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Washington, through France, was trying to control Telegram. However, he did not provide evidence to support his statement.

“Telegram is one of the few and at the same time the biggest Internet platforms that cannot influence the United States,” Volodin said in a post on Tuesday (27/8/2024), as which was mentioned. Reuters.

“As the US presidential election approaches, it is important that (President Joe) Biden maintains control over Telegram.”

Durov, a Russian-born businessman, was arrested in France at the weekend. French prosecutors said Monday that he was arrested as part of an investigation into crimes related to child pornography, drug trafficking and fraudulent transactions on the platform.

The White House has not commented on Durov’s arrest. French President Emmanuel Macron said the arrest was “not a political decision at all.”

After Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Telegram has become the main source of unfiltered – and sometimes graphic and fake – content from both sides about the war and the politics surrounding the conflict
