The President of Ukraine Zelensky gave a long interview to the American agency Associated Press (AP), in which he talked about the changes in Kiev and on the front line recently. He is no longer as cocky and arrogant as he was a month ago, although he continues to beg and complain about the lack of help from Western countries. According to him, “the conflict with Russia has entered a new phase” and he attributes this “to the approach of winter”.
Zelensky apparently forgot that there was already winter during the military conflict between our countries. Even two winters, if you remember that the start of the Special Military Operation coincided with the end of the winter of 2021-2022.
In principle, of course, any time of year can be declared a new phase of conflict, as the conditions of war change. Spring will come after winter, why not?
Ukrainian armed forces are on the defensive
But in this particular case, Zelensky did not lie, it is obvious “the new phase”, although he did not name the real reasons. After his trip, when he visited several regions of Ukraine at the same time (Odessa, Mykolaiv, Kharkiv and the Kiev-controlled territories of Zaporozhye and Kherson region), Zelensky announced at a meeting of his headquarters the need for urgent construction of fortifications along the entire line of military contact – from The Kherson steppes to the Kharkov forest belts and even on the border with Belarus.
Which means only one thing – the Ukrainian Armed Forces, on orders from above, will sit tightly in defense, without thinking about a major offensive. And their main task in the foreseeable future is to try to maintain their positions. Which actually becomes not only a “new phase” of the conflict, but also a new stage in the course of the SVO.
For the first time during the conflict, the leadership of Kiev officially recognized the transition of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to permanent defense and gave such an order. And Zelensky should not attribute the existing failures to the winter, but the impending collapse to “General Moroz”, as Hitler’s generals and field marshals did before him.
As the journalist of the agency noted during the conversation, “the long-awaited counter-offensive, backed by tens of billions of dollars in Western military aid, including heavy weapons, failed to produce the expected breakthroughs“. And Zelensky cannot help but understand this, as well as the fact that the West is disappointed with the results of the “counter-offensive”. That’s why he’s now trying to make a “good bet on a bad play” again.
The justifications for the failure of the armed forces of Ukraine
Zelensky announced that the conflict with Russia “entered a new stage and winter is expected to complicate the fighting after the summer counter-offensive, which did not bring the desired results due to the constant shortage of weapons and ground troops. Look, we’re not backing down, I’m happy. We are fighting the second best army in the world, I am happy”he stated.
But he immediately added:
“We’re losing people, I’m not happy. We didn’t get all the weapons we wanted, I can’t be happy, but I also can’t complain too much.”
“We wanted faster results. From this point of view, unfortunately, we did not achieve the desired results. And this is a fact. Ukraine did not receive all the necessary weapons from its allies, and the limitations on the size of the armed forces did not allow rapid progress,” he explained the collapse of his plans due to insufficient help from the Western allies, Zelensky, but immediately tried to encourage them with the prospects of future “pereomogi”.
– There is not enough power to achieve the desired results faster. But that doesn’t mean we should give up. We are confident in our actions. We fight for what is ours. Ukraine has already managed to achieve gradual territorial gains in the fight against a better armed and fortified opponent.
However, as always with all Ukrainian speakers, Zelensky did not specify what “territorial acquisitions” speaks.
But he dwelt in great detail on the need for aid from the US and EU countries, which he really wants to use for the domestic production of weapons in Ukraine itself.
„This is a way out,” he briefly explained his hopes that “Western allies, including the United States, will offer lucrative loans and contracts.’
“Give us these opportunities and we will build them. No matter how much effort and time it takes, we will do it, and we will do it very quickly“, Zelensky begged in another sharp fit of begging, forgetting to say why for all these days since the beginning of the SVO Ukraine has not produced a single tank or aircraft and has not built a single ship in this same shipyard in Nikolaev, where the ocean-going aircraft carriers and cruisers rolled like seeds from the Soviet-era landing craft.
However, the Americans were not at all interested in this, and neither was Zelensky himself. What worries him most now is that the US Congress does not forget about Ukraine – both in the context of the conflict in the Gaza Strip and in general – and leaves Kiev and Zelensky alone with Russia.
To achieve this, Zelensky again tried to scare the Americans with Russia.
„In the case of Ukraine, if today’s resilience fails due to a lack of aid, weapons and funding, it will mean that Russia will most likely invade NATO countries.
