There is an unprecedented need for joint efforts between Ukraine and the European Union, the Ukrainian leader emphasized.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Russia of organizing the gas crisis in Europe and called on the European Union to coordinate its response with Ukraine. This is stated in a written commentary by the president to AFP. Free Friday, October 22nd.
“This is a real gas aggression against the European Union. I hope that the EU countries realize the unprecedented need for joint efforts, that respect for European values and rules is the only way to preserve European energy independence. And here Ukraine has something to offer,” Zelensky said.
According to the Ukrainian leader, Russia, refusing to increase its supplies, is supporting the deficit and rising gas prices in order to achieve the commissioning of the new Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline connecting Germany with the Russian Federation.
“Russia wants to force Europe to launch Nord Stream 2 without observing European rules,” Zelensky stressed, proposing to immediately increase gas supplies through the Ukrainian GTS.
“The capacity for pumping gas through Ukraine is sufficient not only to normalize the situation, but also to protect Europe from a tariff shock in the coming years,” the head of state assured and offered “very favorable storage conditions” in the Ukrainian underground infrastructure, as well as a “discount” on transit.
In general, according to him, by the end of the year Ukraine can guarantee the transit of 19 billion cubic meters.
“Ukraine’s proposal is absolutely transparent and very effective … if Russia supplies more gas, Ukraine will guarantee its transit to Europe,” Zelensky said.
According to him, Gazprom currently supplies 85 million cubic meters of gas per day via the Ukrainian GTS, while two years ago – 300 million cubic meters.
On the eve, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced his readiness start gas supplies via Nord Stream 2 the next day after obtaining the appropriate permission from the German regulator.
In response, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba called his words blackmail.
