Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he was confident the war with Russia would “end sooner” if Donald Trump became US president.

President Zelensky said they “had a constructive conversation” in a phone call after President-elect Trump won the U.S. presidential election.

He did not say what demands Trump had made regarding possible negotiations with Russia, but added that he had not heard anything that contradicted Ukraine’s position.

Trump has consistently said his top priority is ending the war that began after Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and has argued that military support for Kiev is a strain on U.S. resources.

Earlier this year, the U.S. House of Representatives approved military aid worth approximately 861.6 trillion won.

The United States is the country that supplied the most weapons to Ukraine, and according to the Kiel Institute for World Economic Research, a German research institute, it promised to deliver or provide about 785 trillion won worth of weapons and equipment from 2022 when the war began until the end of last June. did it

However, domestically, support for arms support to Ukraine appears to have weakened somewhat compared to the beginning of the war. This trend was especially noticeable among Republican supporters, where former President Trump effectively captured votes.

During the U.S. presidential campaign, President-elect Trump repeatedly promised to “end the war in one day,” but has not yet specified how he will achieve this.

“It is certain that the war will end sooner due to the policies of the team that will now lead the White House,” President Zelenskyy said in an interview with Ukrainian media outlet Suspline.

President Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine “must end the war next year, and it must be ended through diplomatic means,” and mentioned the situation in which Russian troops are currently continuing their advance on the battlefield.

Since Ukraine’s counteroffensive last year failed to achieve the expected goal of retaking territory, the front has been largely at a standstill. The Russian army has established solid defensive lines in the eastern and southeastern regions, and fighting continues mainly in the eastern Donetsk region.

According to the Washington, D.C.-based Institute for War Studies (ISW), Russian troops made a small advance on the Eastern Front on the 15th (local time), and fierce fighting took place around Kupyansk in the northeast and Bukhledar in the southeast. Russian forces also launched a “limited” offensive in the northeastern Kharkiv region, according to reports citing Ukrainian military sources.

To stop Russia’s advance, Ukrainian forces launched an offensive into Russia’s Kursk region during the summer. This marked the first time Ukraine occupied Russian territory since World War II.

President Zelenskyy said the goal of the operation was to divert Russian forces away from the Ukrainian front, but said its effectiveness was still unclear. While Russia has strengthened its military with millions of conscripts, Ukraine’s relatively small military relies on advanced Western weapons support.

Analysts believe the territory Ukraine currently holds in Kursk could be used as a bargaining chip in peace talks. According to Zelenskyy’s “victory plan”, the attacks will continue in order to avoid creating a “buffer zone” within Ukraine.

Meanwhile, as war fatigue grows, the emphasis on diplomatic solutions is once again growing. However, it is still unclear what the solution will look like in detail.

Zelenskiy said he would not cede any Ukrainian territory, including Crimea, which Russia has occupied since 2014.

Trump’s Democratic opponents accuse him of flattering with Russian President Putin and argue that his proposed approach would mean capitulation to Ukraine and would put all of Europe at risk.

Earlier this week, following President-elect Trump’s presidential victory, Russia denied reports that there had been a phone call between Putin and Trump. There was also a claim that in this call, President-elect Trump warned against further aggravating the conflict.

After speaking with Trump after the US election, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz told German media that Trump had a more “nuanced” position on the war than expected.

Prime Minister Scholz was criticized by Zelenskyy for his first phone call with Putin in almost two years on the 15th (local time). Scholz’s allies said they had repeatedly called for an end to the war, but Zelenskyy said the call had undermined the Russian leader’s isolation.
