Zeldin, Hochul offer different visions for New York

Public security, the migration crisis and the economy were some of the key topics in the only debate between the current governor, Kathy Hochul, and the candidate for governor, Congressman Lee Zeldin.

Zeldin initially opposed this debate because he wanted Hochul to accept more games. But Hochul only agreed to participate in this.

In his opening remarks, Zeldin accused Hochul of being soft on crime and favoring cashless bail.

Zeldin has promised to get rid of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, if elected.

But Hochul defended his public safety record, most notably for taking illegal weapons off the streets, while accusing Zeldin of doing nothing while in Congress on the gun issue and trying to cancel the 2020 presidential election.

The two also had major disagreements over the economy.

Other topics of discussion included housing, the migration crisis, economic development and Covid-19 policies.

The scheduled meeting comes two weeks before general election day and a few days before early voting begins.

The debate will air in Spanish on NY1 Noticias on Wednesdays at 7pm and 11pm
