Zeiss Acquires Ncam: Enhancing Cinema Product Portfolio with Hybrid Camera Tracking Technology

Zeiss has acquired Ncam.

Ncam has been involved with exciting developments in camera tracking and VR technologies from a very early stage (Ncam News).

Now Zeiss has taken over the British company and will include the hybrid camera tracking technology in its cinema product portfolio.

With this takeover, Zeiss is expanding its technology portfolio, particularly for the cinema, broadcast and visual effects industries. Ncam’s multi-award-winning hybrid camera tracking technology makes it possible to collect position and object distance data from a camera on set using different tracking methods. This means that spatial data about the camera itself and the objects in front of the camera are also available synchronously with the images — and this means that very realistic combinations of real images and computer-generated elements can be used in the VR and AR area for both studio and outdoor recordings to be created.

The camera bar records distances between the sensor plane and image objects, thus providing synchronous depth information on the image content.

The tracking data obtained is essential for virtual production and live compositing, but it also brings great added value in post-production.

From Zeiss’ point of view, this technology is an excellent addition to the company’s cinema product range. So far, this includes the lens series Supreme Prime and Supreme Prime Radiance, Cinema Zoom and CP.3, as well as the ecosystem of lens data behind them. Zeiss recently introduced lens data-related services as part of its CinCraft system.

The data can be recorded, made available and processed on the server.

Together, Zeiss and Ncam want to offer easy-to-use tracking and VFX solutions for professional production workflows, the companies explain.

Christophe Casenave, Zeiss.

“We are delighted to be able to combine Ncam’s unique tracking technology with Zeiss’ many years of expertise in cinema lenses, lens data and the cinema market,” says Christophe Casenave, responsible for Cinematography Products at Zeiss. »This allows us to think beyond current camera tracking possibilities in order to be able to offer innovative solutions specifically for visual effects, virtual production and other applications.«

Brice Michoud, Ncam.

Brice Michoud, Head of Research and Development at Ncam adds: “The team looks forward to working with our new colleagues at Zeiss on the next level of camera tracking technology and making it available to even more users than before deliver.”

Founded in 2012, Ncam has offices in London and Los Angeles. The combination of Ncam and Zeiss global resources is expected to result in enhanced customer support and exciting innovations in the cine and broadcast markets and beyond.

Zeiss will ensure that existing Ncam users benefit from every new feature and improvement to the technology and will offer a compelling upgrade program. A first product announcement is to be made this summer.
