A woman from Middelburg was trapped in a sinkhole for two hours last night. She was walking through her backyard around 7:15 p.m. when she suddenly fell through the ground.
Her husband and neighbor save her life by holding her head above the quicksand. “It was a very serious situation,” a police spokesperson told Broadcasting Zeeland. “Thanks to the woman’s neighbor and husband, she could continue to breathe. Only her body temperature started to drop after a while, which kept it exciting.”
Emergency services were able to free her after about two hours. She was taken to hospital for a check-up, the police spokesman said. “She could immediately stand on her own two feet.”
The sinkhole was probably created by the heavy rainfall in recent days.
