Corona may feel like a long time ago, but a new pandemic is always lurking.
The government is therefore investing heavily in additional measures to reduce the risk of a pandemic. With this investment, the GGDs are strengthening infectious disease control in their region, in order to be (better) prepared for a pandemic. Preparing for a pandemic is also called pandemic preparedness.
Zeeland pandemic preparedness: solid basis for infectious disease control
GGD Zeeland is also committed to strengthening infection control in Zeeland municipalities with the ‘Zeeland Pandemic Preparedness’ project. Additional capacity and knowledge have been attracted to lay a solid foundation for the future.
Significant progress has been made within the project since the start of the project in 2023.
Monitoring and surveillance at home
An innovation that was recently created under the project is our own dashboard with which we can work data-driven and information-driven on monitoring and surveillance of infectious diseases. Local outbreaks of infectious diseases, such as the recent increase in whooping cough infections, are quickly identified, allowing us to take timely measures; for example, by informing general practitioners, schools and partner organizations. The surveillance also looks at the situation in the neighboring provinces and we work closely with GGDs in Brabant and Limburg.
Infectious disease control doctors
Another development is that GGD Zeeland has been certified as a practice institution for supervising doctors in training, which means we can at the same time interest future doctors in a job at our GGD.
Continued attention to prevention
We continue to focus on prevention, such as increasing the regional vaccination rate and promoting a healthy living environment in Zeeland. For example, a study is currently underway into the history of disease-spreading mosquitoes in Zeeland. The results can lead to preventive measures.
