JAKARTA – Scientists managed to find a continent hidden for almost 375 years. The continent was known as Zealandia or Te Riu-a-Māui in the Māori language.

According to TN News, Friday (1/9/2023), Zealand has an area of 1.89 million square miles. It was part of a supercontinent called Gondwana, which included most of West Antarctica and Eastern Australia, more than 500 million years ago.

It is said that this continent was first discovered in 1642 by the Dutch businessman and sailor Abel Tasman, who was eager to uncover Southern Great Continent .

Despite failing to find the continent, he encountered the Māori population, who were initially unhappy with his arrival. However, they still provide information about the surrounding land, including the existence of a large land area to the east.

It wasn’t until 2017 that geologists discovered the continent had been hidden from prying eyes.

Scientists agree on the existence of Zealandia, which is starting to drift away from Gondwana for reasons scientists are still trying to understand.

Most of the continent This newly discovered is underwater and has been used as an example by geologists at Zealand Crown Research Institute GNS Science of how something so obvious can take a while to unravel.

“It’s a process that we don’t fully understand yet, Zealandia is starting to get pulled out,” Tulloch said.
