São Paulo. Former full-back Zé Carlos, runner-up with Brazil in the 1998 World Cup in France, died this Friday at the age of 56, reported the Sao Paulo soccer club, where the defender played for two seasons.
“With immense pain and sadness, the Sao Paulo Futbol Club informs and regrets the death of José Carlos de Almeida, Zé Carlos, which occurred this Friday in the city of Osasco,” near the capital of São Paulo, the Tricolor said in a statement.
The team declared official mourning for the death of the former right striker, whose death, according to local media, was caused by cardiorespiratory arrest.
Born in the Presidente Bernardes municipality, in the state of Sao Paulo, Zé Carlos had the best moment of his career when he was called up by the legendary former coach Mário Lobo Zagallo for the 1998 World Cup in France.
The then Sao Paulo player, where he played between 1997 and 1999, was Cafu’s substitute in the tournament, to which Canarinhaguided by Ronaldo Nazário and Rivaldo, arrived with the label of favorite after having won its fifth world title in the United States 1994.
He was a starter, however, in the semifinal between Brazil and the Netherlands, defeated on penalties by the Selection (1-1, 4-2), following a suspension by Cafu.
Zé Carlos watched the 3-0 defeat in the final against Zinedine Zidane’s France from the bench.
After the World Cup he never defended his country again and retired from football years later, after playing for several Brazilian clubs, including Gremio de Porto Alegre.
