The great defenseman signed a one-year contract with the New York Islanders, the team that drafted him in the third round in 1996.
The Islanders made the announcement on social media on Saturday and the Slovak was quick to mention it on his Instagram account, posting a photo of himself in his old team jersey. It’s a little dusty, but I’m sure it still looks good on me.
Chara played 14 seasons in the NHL with the Boston Bruins, with whom he won the Stanley Cup in 2011.
He got his hands on the Norris Trophies (2009), awarded to the best defenseman in the NHL, and Mark-Messier (2011), which rewards leadership both on and off the ice, in addition to be named three times on the first team of all stars.
In the 2020-2021 season, the 44-year-old defenseman played with the Washington Capitals.
This will be his 24th NHL season. Among the players still active, Zdeno Chara is ranked 2nd in the League for the most games played (1608) behind Patrick Marleau (1779).
