Much of the trouble caused by Covid-19 could end in late spring, but then it will be necessary to assess whether the disease is seasonal and how vaccines can be adapted to different types of the virus. Dace Zavadska, head of the Family Vaccination Center at the hospital.

She thinks that new variants of Covid-19 are expected in the future, and by the end of April, almost everyone will have the disease, both vaccinated and non-vaccinated. However, this does not automatically mean that vaccines are not very effective.

“I do not want to say that vaccines are not good. They are good, they saved the world in some way. But if we want to stay with them for a long time, they have to be improved, ”the professor points out.

Asked whether the 2022 Covid-19 pandemic will be better than the past, Zavadsky recalls that “what we say today about the covid may change in a few weeks or a month,” so it’s better to talk about what we know. now, rather than claiming what will happen in the future.

“It simply came to our notice then that omicron will spread. Omycron is expected to be the dominant option in Europe in mid-and late January. We do not know today whether this will displace the delta option or whether the two options will be combined. In those countries where omicron is more prevalent, in the Scandinavian countries, in the United Kingdom, hospitalizations are 50-70% lower than in the delta. On the one hand, that’s fine. Everyone is sick, vaccinated people will also become infected, ”says the doctor.

Asked to assess the easing of certain restrictions previously imposed due to the pandemic before the New Year, she is concerned that the consequences could have a negative impact on the healthcare system.

“I hope that those who started will take into account the situation in the hospitals at the end of January. The responsibility of doctors and the entire health care system will remain, but I don’t think everyone will be able to endure the strain on their physical and emotional abilities again. ”

Regarding the primary vaccination and the form of omicron, Zavadska admits that the beneficiaries will be those who received the so-called third dose of the vaccine later, as its effect against omicron works for no more than ten weeks. However, the best protected people are those who have both been vaccinated and have contracted Covid-19.

This does not mean that vaccinated people should consciously try to get sick to improve their immune response, because the risks outweigh the potential benefits – vaccinated Covid-19 patients also die, she reminds.

The head of the IVP anticipates that the situation created by Covid-19 will change greatly in the late spring.

“Once we’re all vaccinated and sick, or just vaccinated, or just sick, when the next options come, we’ll have to see if the virus has seasonality. (..) In short, I think we will finish this party by late spring, the summer will probably be better, and then, if we still need the vaccines, we will have to adjust them – the manufacturers have said they can do it. I do not think that everyone will need a booster vaccination. It will be more needed in people over 65, people with co-morbidities, immunosuppressed people. ”

For the future, Covid-19 is likely to be known only as a seasonal virus, which will “pause for a while, perhaps more seriously, get to the hospital, but vaccines will be available to everyone, probably for public money,” the specialist said. .

Asked how long the society may have to wear face masks, Zavadska hopes that this requirement could be lifted in the spring.

In an interview with SestDienai, the doctor also praises the work of the State Police in trying to obtain fake Covid-19 vaccination certificates.

“We feel a serious police job, a really informal attitude. Already in the summer, they came and asked for advice and looked for all sorts of ways to detect fake certificates to help the public. I haven’t had much contact with the police in other areas, but if it is just as interested in those areas, take your hat off! ” evaluates Zavadska.
