With a decent performance, Renata Zarazúa said goodbye to the US Open in the second round after having made history by breaking a streak of almost 30 years without a Mexican competing in the four Grand Slams of tennis.
Zarazúa’s gaze revealed a desire to increase her feat. However, the Danish Caroline Wozniacki, who was world number one a few years ago, showed her experience and good technique to beat the Mexican by a score of 6-3 and 6-3.
Even though Zarazúa, 26, was eliminated early in this tournament, her participation is recognized as a feat, and not only for having advanced to the second round after having surprised with a victory against the French Caroline García, with which she placed herself in 92nd place in the world ranking.
Zarazúa burst onto the courts of the four Grand Slams this year, ending a long absence for the tricolors. Since 1995, Angélica Gavaldón had been the last Mexican to have played in the Australian Open, Roland Garros, Wimbledon and the US Open.
Wozniacki, 34, imposed her game from the start but had to take a break to receive medical attention shortly before the end of the second set. The Dane is looking to return to the elite after taking a break from 2020 to 2023 to deal with rheumatoid arthritis and give birth to two children.
“My body is the biggest problem now, I try to stay strong but I am not 20 anymore. Renata was taking me a bit off my rhythm and I had to push myself harder,” she said.
