Zarazúa bids farewell to the Guadalajara Open

Guadalajara. Mexican tennis player Renata Zarazúa was eliminated from the 2024 Guadalajara Open in the second round after losing to Italian Martina Trevisan, this Wednesday in a day marked by a brave reaction from Colombian Camila Osorio and the elimination of American Danielle Collins, second seed.

In the main match, Trevisan, world number 99, defeated Zarazúa, ranked 85, in two sets with partial scores of 6-4 and 6-3 in two hours and one minute of play.

“It was a very difficult match for me because Renata is a player who fights and works hard. I showed a lot of energy at the beginning, but I ended up very tired. The important thing is that I won in two sets because in three it would have been very difficult,” said Trevisan after qualifying for the quarterfinals.

In a long match that lasted three hours and 21 minutes, Osorio (80/WTA) defeated the Russian Veronika Kudermetova (42/WTA), seventh seed, in three sets with a score of 7-6 (7/5), 6-7 (2/7) and 7-5.

In the third set, the South American player recovered from a 0-5 deficit with discomfort in his right shoulder.

“I don’t know how I turned this match around, it was very uphill. I’m a warrior and I had to fight until the end no matter the score,” said Osorio.

The biggest surprise of the day was Australian Olivia Gadecki’s victory over American Danielle Collins with a double 6-3.

Gadecki (152/WTA) eliminated Collins (11/WTA) in a match that lasted one hour and 24 minutes.

Wednesday’s match had an unfortunate start due to the withdrawal of Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, third seed, due to a right shoulder injury in the second set of her match against Russian Kamilla Rakhimova.

After one hour and three minutes of play, Rakhimova (89/WTA), 23 years old, was winning 6-2 and 3-0, against Azarenka (19/WTA), 35 years old.

“I feel so sorry for Vika, she’s an amazing player, she’s my role model and I was close to beating her today,” Rakhimova said after securing her place in the quarter-finals.

The second round of the tournament will continue on Thursday with the appearances of two of the top seeds: Latvian Jelena Ostapenko (1) and French Caroline Garcia (4).

The Guadalajara Open is a WTA-500 tournament played on hard courts at the Pan American Tennis Center and awards a prize pool of $922,573.
