Nineteen-year-old Zara Rutherford wants to become the youngest woman to travel the world on her own. During his trip, which he will set out on next month, he will visit a total of 52 countries and cross the equator twice.
The journey will start on August 11 from his native Brussels and the expedition is expected to last up to three months.
Zara claims to come from a family of pilots. “We have it in the family, I started formal training at the age of 14 and I got a license last year,” he tells PA Media, adding that the biggest challenge for it will be remote places such as northern Russia or Greenland. “Not many people live there, so if something went wrong, I would be in a bit of an awkward situation,” he admits.
She chose the route to meet the requirements of the Guinness Book of Records. Zaru is waiting for a flight over the Atlantic via Greenland, Canada and South America to Alaska, then via Russia to Indonesia and then return to Europe, writes the server BBC.
Despite her difficult journey, her parents support her. “I had to convince my mother, but she managed it, my father supports me a lot and helps me with logistics,” says Zara, who finances the flight herself.
The teenager will fly the ultralight sports aircraft Shark UL, which holds a number of speed records. The current first place around the world by plane belongs to the American Shaesta Waiz, who was 30 years old.
