Some time ago, the fashion retail brand Zara was widely discussed due to their new campaign entitled The Jacket. The campaign, which featured mannequins, incomplete statues and ruins as a backdrop, drew harsh criticism.
The reason is, the campaign with this concept gives the impression of satire on the Palestinian people who are currently experiencing genocide. Especially when the advertising photo shows a mannequin wrapped in white plastic which the public considers reminiscent of the bodies of war victims.
Although it gives focus to the jacket that shows craftsmanship Zara Atelier, the campaign actually invited controversy. Netizens from various parts of the world attacked the comments column of their uploads, expressing disappointment and even calling for a boycott of Zara. After holding out for quite some time, Zara finally deleted all the campaign photos and gave an official statement via their Instagram account, @zara.
“After hearing comments regarding the latest Zara Atelier campaign “The Jacket”we would like to share the following with our customers:
The campaign, conceived in July and photographed in September, features a series of images of unfinished sculptures in a sculptor’s studio and was created with the sole purpose of showcasing handmade clothing in an artistic context.
Unfortunately, a number of customers were offended by this image, which has now been removed, and saw in it something far from what was intended when the image was created.
Zara regrets the misunderstanding and we reaffirm our deep respect for everyone”.

The statement was still not welcomed by those who read it. Disappointment and anger still flood the comments column. Many of those who wrote will continue to boycott Zara, as revealed by the account @nez****** “The most narcissistic fake apology if I ever seen one!!! Boycott 4 life 🇵🇸🇵🇸”
Comments from the @idd*********** account stated, “Feeling offended” yeah put the fault in the customers shoes! SHAME ON YOU! This is not even an apology!!!! I am pretty sure you’re aware of what is happening in the world right now – we are in the middle of a genocide and EVEN IF this campaign was photographed months back, this was just not the right time to post it! Anyway it’s fast fashion💩👋🏼” and liked by more than 900 other users.
Other accounts such as @ruq******** also highlighted that the creation of the campaign was intentional because the details were so similar to the original situation. “Lol if you think you’re getting off Scot free because of this lame attempt at an “apology” you’re wrong. 1. You knew the situation in Gaza before you decided to post these. 2. The images were posted in several separate posts, each with hundreds of thousands of comments. It still took you many days to remove them— only when you saw the *actual* backlash. And finally 3. There is no way in hell this wasn’t done on purpose. We are not stupid. The imagery was precise, all the way down to the nitty gritty details. Sorry, but no.”
Not the first time Zara has been called anti-Palestinian

This is not the first time this controversy has occurred, Beauties. Zara womenswear designer, Vanessa Perilman, once caused a scandal due to her statement against a Palestinian model, Qaher Harhash, in June 2021. Precisely after the Israel-Hamas conflict heated up for 11 days in 2021.
Quoting CNN Style, Harhash shared a pro-Palestinian call via his Instagram which Perilman responded to via direct message. The screenshot of the message from Perilman was published by the model, “Maybe if your people were educated then they wouldn’t blow up hospitals and schools that Israel helped to pay for in Gaza. Israelis don’t teach children to hate nor throw stones at soldiers as your people do”. (Maybe if your society [Palestina] educated then they wouldn’t blow up Israeli-funded hospitals and schools in Gaza. Israelis don’t teach children to hate or throw stones at soldiers like your society does)
Perilman then added, “I will NEVER stop defending Israel”.
Since the message was published, Perilman has experienced death threats, including to his children. He also apologized and deleted his Instagram account.
