News from the NOStoday, 21:27

The director of the nuclear power plant in the Zaporizhzhya region of Ukraine has been released, says the head of the IAEA, an international nuclear control body. Rafael Grossi says Ihor Murashov is safe with his family again.

The nuclear reactor boss, located in the territory occupied by the Russian army, was captured last week. According to Energoatom, owner of all Ukrainian nuclear power plants, Murashov was arrested on Saturday on his way from work to the city of Enerhodar. He is said to have been removed from his car and taken blindfolded to an unknown location.

According to the IAEA, the safety of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant was under pressure after Murashov’s capture. Grossi asked Russia to release Murashov. The nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe, has been in Russian hands since the beginning of March, but is managed by Ukrainian personnel.

Illegal annexation

Due to the war, the area around the plant is regularly under fire. The IAEA has repeatedly called for measures to prevent a nuclear accident at the nuclear power plant.

In September, the nuclear supervisory body conducted an investigation of the plant. The subsequent report states that damage to the nuclear power plant has been identified, including in the vicinity of the reactors. The IAEA therefore supports a safety zone around the plant.

Zaporizhzhya is also one of the regions that Russia lost after a fake referendum last week illegally annexed.
