The still lives created in Zane Priedes’ studio are full of the beauty of the 1990s. The pictures show things that were normal at that time, which, in contact with people’s emotional experiences, create a landscape of material memories. In the author’s writings, memories of the past are transferred to the scenes of today, telling about the interaction of time and things. On the other hand, material prints help to create our shared world and experience, through which we create relationships both with the surrounding environment and with each other.
The artist plays with life in the gray of the Soviet Union, showing the capitalist and consumer products of the 1990s, which in the end were just cheap images. Gypsum, linoleum, various plastic and glass materials, as well as references to eating culture in the author’s images move past memories to this day. The nineties are still present and can be felt not only in Zane’s hyperbolized images, but also in our homes, DEPOs, small town shops and other places, evoking a sense of nostalgia.
